What makes a cozy holiday apartment?

I stayed in a vacation rental for a few days while looking for a new home in Florida, and the house we stayed in was so inviting I thought I’d write about why. When renting, I pay attention to cleanliness, comfort and style at an affordable price. I guess I don’t spend too much time in the apartment because I’m traveling, but I want to feel comfortable when I’m there.

When I travel, I often stay in a vacation rental rather than a hotel for these reasons. I’ve already written about what makes a great guest room for travelers renting private rooms. I thought I’d take a different approach and comment on the decorative choices that create a cozy environment. These are the mental notes I’ll make if I ever host a vacation rental myself!

Cozy living room furniture is a big draw as tenants spend a lot of their free time there. This particular space had a modern leather sofa for lounging and watching TV, equipped with multiple streaming services for entertainment. The pair of chairs completed the conversation zone and the coffee table was where I placed my coffee each morning while researching local real estate listings.

Note the light oak vinyl plank floors that were so easy to keep clean. The wicker chairs and baskets add texture, the dark wood tones add warmth and contrast, and the black accents give the space a modern feel.

Throughout the two bedroom house the owner had scattered some really beautiful faux plants that give an organic feel but are also worry free as they don’t need to be watered. The artwork was a combination of contemporary art and landscapes.

Both bedrooms contained clean cotton sheets and duvets with piles of fluffy towels for our use. The owners kept the window treatments simple with white drapes on the windows adding an airy feel.

Benches are a thoughtful piece to complement a room, providing a place to put luggage or sit while taking off your shoes. I’m also a big fan of tall mirrors in bedrooms to confirm clothing choices! A place to hang sweaters, hats or handbags is also a practical addition to a guest room.

The bathrooms were renovated and very clean. I particularly liked the tile in the showers and was impressed with the hotel style shampoo/conditioner/body wash dispenser, a smart choice that every guest will appreciate! I want one for my shower too. 🙂

The kitchen was clean, recently renovated and well equipped. My son especially loved the large dining table where he worked on his laptop.

It’s handy when the owners include a booklet with wifi passwords, house rules and local recommendations for restaurants or activities, I love that!

There was a nice little outdoor seating area in the backyard which we didn’t use much but it was an added bonus.

Overall it was a very pleasant experience due to the decorative choices and finishes chosen by the owner. All the little touches made the home feel clean and cozy during our stay.
